OUr Campaign
Through the $5 million Opening Doors to Dignity campaign, Ottawa Salus will build the first supportive housing community in Canada for older adults who have spent a lifetime coping with mental health, substance use, homelessness, hospitalization, isolation, stigma and other significant challenges.
With its newest project on Capilano Drive in Nepean, Ottawa Salus addresses an overlooked and urgent need in Ottawa’s current housing crisis:
Access to evidence-based clinical programs and purpose-built supportive housing for older adults with a long history of mental illness.
Salus Capilano’s 54-unit apartment building will be a distinct community within the surrounding neighbourhood.
It will welcome and support men, women and gender-diverse people who have faced many life challenges, from hospitalization and homelessness to substance use, isolation, abandonment, unemployment and despair.
By the time they reach their mid-forties, these adults have aged faster than most and are experiencing health problems similar to people in their sixties and seventies. In short, they are physically older than their chronological age.
For these vulnerable individuals, opportunities for aging in place with dignity and independence are virtually non-existent in one of Canada’s wealthiest cities.
“Salus is an expert in permanent, supportive housing for people with severe and persistent mental illness and substance use health issues. We’ve been successfully doing this for more than 45 years.
We support over 800 adults through intensive support programs and services and transitional and permanent affordable housing.”
